Feminist Sex

Emily Boorman

Feminism. Sex. Two very different words with two very different meanings and objectives but for some reason, people seem to link them together. For years the feminist movement has been continuing to grow and make a change and difference within society. Yes, there are still changes to be made, but equal rights and opportunities for women have come a long way. For some reason, though in society today saying you are a feminist can come with a lot of stigma due to people making a prejudgment of what a feminist is and categorising an individual who classes themselves as one into a certain stereotype. The truth is even though feminism is a strong and well-known movement today, it is still clear that certain people are uneducated in what feminists are trying to do and what they believe in. Feminists don't hate men and sex doesn't go against what feminists believe in. Feminism is all about the sexes being equal, so the question is there such thing as feminist sex?

Questions based around having sex as a feminist are asked a lot, for instance, is it feminist to choke a woman in bed? The answer is if she wants to. Does it make you a bad feminist if you want to be clean-shaven downstairs for the satisfaction of a male? The answer is nothing makes you a bad feminist and it is completely up to you.

Feminist sex has no rules or guidelines; it is all about having the sex that you want to instead of the sex you think you should be having. When it comes to sex people have so many expectations that they have learnt from the porn they watch, their friends, their parents, sex education they learnt at school or just general mainstream media. These expectations and fantasies need to be forgotten, feminist sex is all about having sex that is free of expectations and maximising pleasure for you and your partner. Even if you are a feminist or not isn’t this how everyone should see and be having sex anyway?

Flo Perry the 27- year-old author and illustrator released her book ‘How to have feminist sex’ in 2019 which explores how feminism is all about equality and how to implement this when you are under the covers. This particular book is a collection of her illustrations and her insightful words about a variety of different topics ranging from body image, consensual non-monogamy, sending nudes, to porn. This book is a must-read as it is about topics everyone should be educated on in today's society. It is the sort of thing I wish I was made to read when I was a teenager in my sex education classes.
